Real-world context
Not the same as sales tax: This tool estimates the CRA income-tested benefit — not the GST/HST collected on purchases. For purchase tax, use the GST/HST Calculator.
File your taxes: You must file a tax return each year to receive the GST/HST credit, even if you had no income. CRA will not send payments without a return.

Calculator method
How to use this result before making a decision
Run a conservative scenario first, then test a best-case and stress-case version. A calculator is most useful when it shows whether the decision survives higher costs, slower payoff, lower returns, or a tighter monthly budget.
Methodology and limits
- Inputs are educational estimates and may use simplified formulas or rounded assumptions.
- Actual results can change because of tax rules, lender terms, fees, timing, compounding, province, credit profile, or provider eligibility.
- Use the output as a planning checkpoint, then confirm final numbers with official sources, your financial institution, employer, insurer, lender, or a qualified professional.
What is the GST/HST credit in Canada?
The GST/HST credit is a quarterly tax-free payment from CRA to help low and moderate-income Canadians offset the sales tax they pay. It is not related to GST collected on purchases — it is an income-tested benefit. Payments are issued in January, April, July, and October.
Who qualifies for the GST/HST credit?
Canadian residents who file a tax return and have low to moderate net income qualify. For 2026, single individuals with net income below approximately $50,000 may receive a benefit; the amount phases out as income rises. Couples, and families with children under 19, qualify for additional amounts.
How much is the GST/HST credit in 2026?
For July 2026 – June 2027: single individuals can receive up to $519/year; married or common-law couples up to $680/year combined; plus $137 per child under 19. These amounts phase out at 5% of net income above approximately $40,000 for couples and $10,000 for singles.
How do I calculate my GST/HST benefit?
Your GST/HST credit is calculated by CRA based on your net family income and family status from your previous year's tax return. The formula: base amount + spousal supplement (if applicable) + per-child amount − 5% phase-out on net income above the threshold. This estimator gives an approximate annual and quarterly amount.
Is the GST/HST credit the same as the GST rebate?
Yes — the GST/HST credit, GST rebate, and GST benefit all refer to the same CRA quarterly payment. It is also sometimes called the GST/HST refund or rebate informally. It is separate from HST rebates on new homes or the new housing rebate, which are one-time purchase-related rebates.
